Grounding Electrodes

March 27, 2009

Last time we discussed the three purposes of grounding, and we briefly touched on the components that make up the grounding system. This month, we will discuss grounding electrodes, what they are and what they do.

Grounding Electrodes – What They Are and What They Do
NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, defines a grounding electrode as “a conducting object through which a direct connection to earth is established.” In other words, a grounding electrode is anything that establishes a direct electrical connection to earth.

How Much Does LEED Cost?

March 13, 2009

I am often asked the question, how much does LEED cost? As a LEED Accredited Professional, my trained answer is that LEED reduces first cost as well as operating cost. As a consulting engineer working in the central mid-west, my answer is that there are no first cost savings; nevertheless, the operating savings achieved through improved building performance can be easily justified through the realization of energy cost savings and reduced maintenance costs.

Commissioneering™ Makes a Difference

March 7, 2009

One day, Gary, Travis and I were at a Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program (HEMP – see http://helzbergmentoring.org/HEMP/), getting our annual dose of business knowledge.  While we were there, I had time to reflect on Commissioning and Engineering, and how sys-tek’s blend of these two services sets us apart from our competitors.  It was then that the word “Commissioneering™” came to mind.  To me, it was a perfect description of what made sys-tek unique, and what made me excited about coming to work each day.

Disclaimer: Grammar is not my strong suit so ignore grammatical errors, however if you want some Differential Equations done, give me a call.

New Construction Commissioning is becoming more and more prevalent. The obvious result is every MEP Engineering firm out there claims to offer Commissioning services. This reminds me of the early 2000’s when Mechanical Contractors decided they wanted to also install HVAC Controls. Similar to the lesson learned by the Mechanical Contractor that HVAC Controls requires unique skills and business models the standard MEP Engineering firm will find the same with Commissioning.

2008 ISPE Annual Meeting & Other Thoughts

November 25, 2008

Starting up a new blog can be challenging.  With well over 100 million blogs out there in the world, my thoughts are not likely to be even in the top half of those that are actively tracked.  In the end, I’ve decided that the best way to start is to just be me, let you know what I’m thinking.  And if my mom is the only that follows me, then that is fine with me (I love you mom!).
