We understand the value of service. We know that great rewards are reaped by those who perform outstanding service. Some of those rewards are feelings of pride, satisfaction, accomplishment and purpose. Volunteerism also helps to develop leadership, planning, project management, and motivational skills. At sys-tek, we value these characteristics as a company and in the individuals that comprise the company. "To challenge ourselves to serve our community" is part of our core purpose.

Joplin, Missouri

On Sunday, May 22nd, 2011, a category EF5 tornado ravaged through the city of Joplin, Missouri, about 160 miles south of our office location in Blue Springs, MO. This tornado was the single deadliest since 1995, killing a total of 139 people and damaging over 2,000 buildings. We are not strangers to tornadoes in this part of the country, and there is no doubt that we will help our neighbors out however we can when such devastation occurs. That is why the next Monday morning, we started collecting and organizing donations for the Red Cross stationed in Joplin. Employees and their family members brought in items that included toothbrushes, soap, wash cloths, baby wipes, shampoo and conditioner, first aid kits, food donations, toilet paper, and other personal care items, as well as monetary donations. The sys-tek company matched donations that the employees made.

sys-tek believes in helping out not only our community, but our surrounding communities because we know that they would do the same for us.

Service League

Our pet project is the Community Service League, where we are providing donations of cash, professional time, and personal energy.

Community Services League has been providing services to those in need since 1916. It began in a Christian Bible study class with Bess Truman (wife of former President Harry Truman) as an active member. Then, as now, caring persons were ready to assist their neighbors less fortunate than themselves by sharing. Food and fuel, whether it be hay for the horses or coal for keeping the home warm, were the main goods that were donated and distributed. On occasion, medical emergencies would arise and medicine or child care would be needed. Whatever the need, caring, compassionate persons were willing to help their neighbors in times of crisis. Their assistance and support in giving them a leg up until they could get back on their feet was the foundation for Community Services League.

HEMP (Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program)

Gary Short — President of sys-tek — is a graduate of the HEMP program and proud to be in the class of 2005.

The Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program (HEMP) was founded in 1995 by Barnett Helzberg, Jr., former owner and President of Helzberg Diamonds. Inspired by his twenty-three year mentoring relationship with Ewing Kauffman, HEMP matches seasoned, successful entrepreneur mentors with less experienced entrepreneur mentees. Considerable mentoring is also fostered through peer-to-peer relationships derived from involvement through HEMP.

Components of the program include a one-on-one mentoring relationship, networking opportunities with peers and veteran business owners, exposure to mentoring skills that can be applied to any professional or personal situation, business educations discussing greatest successes and lessons learned from peers and top CEOs in the community.
